Lower back pain and sciatic pain

Injuries and pressures on the lower spine can cause both local pain, and sometimes be associated with sciatic pain, which feels like a radiating pain, numbness or tingling down the length of the sciatic nerve from the lower back, through the glutes, down the back of the legs to your feet.

Lower back pain may be due to aching muscles from strenuous work, or more seriously, due to damage of the discs between the lumbar vertebrae. Sciatica is the irritation of the sciatic nerve at some point in its length. It is common for it to be due to spinal injury, but can be due to other internal structures that are inflamed and impinging on it, such as the piriformis muscle, or a growing foetus in pregnancy.

What can we do to help?

Reflexology works by helping the body and its systems to regain their natural balance, by working with the Chi energy that flows through our bodies. This influences the parasympathetic nervous system, and help the body to balance and heal itself. Deep relaxation will have the effect of releasing tension in muscles and nerves that we may not realise is present.
